Introduction:
Geography is the study of different factors such as land utilization, population, climate, soil, vegetation and industries across the world. Geography consists of two branches, namely physical geography and human geography. People specialized in the field go geography are known as geographers.
Study of geology includes analyzing materials, organisms, structures and processes of the Earth. The work of geologists is to understand the past history of our planet in order to visualize the processes of the past and future.

Nature of work:

  • Environmental Geology: You can be involved in water and soil testing and remediation, assessment of sites for pollution types and amounts, clean-up of toxic chemicals from the water and/or soil. 
  • Engineering Geology: Engineering geologists work with other professionals to oversee the planning and construction of buildings, bridges, roads, dams, landfills, and tunnels. Geological engineers are experts in rock strength, the stability of slopes, and the mechanics of soils. 
  • Geological Education: You can specialize in Middle Childhood or Secondary Education, bringing the Earth Sciences to children of a broad spectrum of ages. Teaching at the college/university level requires a Ph.D. at most institutions. 
  • Petroleum Geology and Economic Geology: This involves searching for and helping to mine or exploit Earth’s resources, including ore minerals, oil, natural gas, and coal. 
  • Field Geology: You can make maps, assess areas for geological activity, and monitor environmental remediation. 
  • Science Writing and Editing: With a combination of English or Journalism coursework, you can write or edit science articles, manuals, and other texts. 
  • Environmental Law: With the background in the earth sciences, you can go on to study and litigate various aspects of the impact of humans on the physical environment.

Career Prospects:
The field of Geography offers various career options to the candidates who are interested in learning different features of the earth. Geographers are placed in different organizations in the role of demographers, agricultural specialists, urban and regional planners and remote sensing specialists, etc. They can also work in research and government sectors. Geographers can also seek placement in research agencies such as environmental issues, population studies, and rural development. Teaching profession can be undertaken in universities, colleges, and schools for those who are geographers. Post- graduate students can also start their own coaching institutes.

Remuneration:
A graduate employed in research institutes and government departments get income salary of Rs 8,000- Rs 15,000 every year depending upon their superiority and experience. In private companies, the compensation is better with benefits such as medical allowances, house rent, etc. Geographers as a teacher can earn an amount of Rs 10,000 - Rs 25,000 every month.
