Floriculture 

Introduction: 
Floriculture includes farming of flowering and ornamental plants that can be used as raw materials in the perfume industry and pharmaceutical sector.

Due to increase in domestic need of flowers, the career scope in the field of floriculture is also increasing. Now a day, demanding of flowers like roses, gerbera, carnation, gladiolus, Orchids and lilies is increasing day by day. Cultivation of flowery plants can be done in open fields, in poly houses or in greenhouses. 

The crops come under floriculture are bedding plants, houseplants, flowering garden and pot plants, cut cultivated greens and cut flowers.

Nature of work: 
Floriculturists are involved in the cultivation of plants that produce beautiful flowers. They focus on the farming of ornamental plants for gardens, floral industry and for export. In addition to this, they also produce plant breeding of new varieties. They also do other jobs like wild harvesting and production of commercial flowers, flower seed, foliage and essential oil crop and production of plant products.

Eligibility Criteria and Duration: 
Different institutes and colleges have their own individual requirement for entrance in the courses offered by them. To enter into the course the candidate should have cleared higher secondary with Botany as a subject. Duration of B.Sc. degree in Horticulture / Floriculture varies as per the institute/college the aspirant is joining and it may be of three, four or five years. To join the course the applicant has to clear the entrance exam conducted by the specific university. After doing B.Sc. (Agriculture) the aspirant can take the degree in M.Sc., which offers specialization in floriculture, phonology or cultivation of fruits and floriculture or cultivation of vegetable. This can be followed by Ph.D. and post-doctoral fellowship.

Career Prospects: 
The floriculturists are basically required in nurseries, Botanical Gardens, farm companies, Genetic companies, Agricultural product companies. Few industries, like cosmetics and perfume manufacturing companies, offer a position to the floriculturist as they need a scientific approach in production and for the better utilization of raw materials.
Many clubs, resorts, townships, malls, industrial areas, parks, public gardens, historical places and historical gardens focus on the decorative attractions and thus need landscaping experts and designers. Making the plants grow in different shapes, creating colorful flower beds etc. come under the working activity.

Technicians in the field work for the construction as well as maintenance of watering systems and the storage systems. Scientists in the field work on the improvements of the existed techniques besides inventing or discovering new methods for better techniques of destination and irrigation.

The Managers are expected to maintain the cultivation related issues along with the sales related issues. Marketing, exporting etc. are the duties. The Managers are often taken as Scientific Officers. Specializations like Green house or Poly-house management are preferred for the role. Estate manager or Plantation expert cum supervisor are the other related job titles. Self-employment is another good choice of the Floriculturists as there is a huge demand for the ornamental plants, flowers, and bouquets. Floriculturists, with the technical knowledge, improve the earnings with limited resources. Planned preparation during the seasons gives productive results. Outdoor flower designing is also an emerging unit.

Remuneration:
Salaries depend on the nature of work one is involved in. While gardeners and laborers may get paid anything between Rs2000 to Rs 3000 per month, Freelance workers, designers, and consultants may negotiate their pay packets depending on the place and nature of work. As this industry depends on lifestyle and purchasing power of the public in general, and on the availability of raw materials and finished products remunerations and profits may vary.
